Frequently Asked Questions

 Frequently Asked Questions
  • I'VE NEVER BEEN FISHING BEFORE - I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

Chicago Charter Boat Company captains and crews are well trained in helping both the experienced and the novice alike. It's their job to make your day as rewarding an experience as possible and they'll make every effort to help you hook and reel in your fish!

  • WHAT DO I WEAR?

A breeze off of Lake Michigan is alot like the the ocean and can be chilly. Dress warm (you can always peel it off!), wear rubber sole shoes or boots and a windbreaker. If the forcast calls for rain bring rain gear some charter services have light rain gear but be safe bring you own.

  • WHAT ABOUT LUNCH?

Bring one! Coolers are welcome on board. All boats can cater your food and drinks for a modest cost.  Please call ahead for this option.

  • WILL I NEED A LICENSE?

Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana requires a license for most recreational fishing. Folks who fish a lot usually purchase a season license every Spring at their neighborhood sporting goods store. All of our charter boats sell short term licenses. The cost is $6.00  -10.00 depending on state per day.

  • WHAT DO I DO WITH MY CATCH?

Your catch will be cleaned or filleted at sea or the dock. Many boats charge a nominal fee 1-2 per fish to clean ice and bag your fish.  You will leave the boat upon returning with your fish in a plastic fish bag.  Storage is available for those fishing multiple days.

  • WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO FISHING?

The short answer is - when they're biting! But we never know when that is for sure so the best thing to do is to schedule your trip around your schedule and hope for the best! Weekends are the most crowded so if you can fish during the week - all the better. If you are limited to weekends be sure to make your reservations well in advance.

  • WHO'S THE BEST BOAT TO GO WITH?

Good question! All of our members have many years of experience. They all love to catch fish. Most are owner/operators. Their livelihood depends on you having a good time and passing the word on to your friends. Word of mouth is the best advertising we can ask for so ask a fishing friend to recommend someone. If your in town and haven't selected a boat yet, wander down on the dock and meet the boats if you wish.  We will do our best to set up your trip according to your specifications.

  • WHAT DOES IT COST TO GO FISHING?

Considering the high cost of a good vessel and its maintenance, charter fees are relatively low. They certainly haven't kept up with inflation over the years. Each charter service prices their trips a little differently so be sure to make sure what the price includes and if there are any "on-board" charges. And remember: the lowest price is not always the best price!
